T. Lyell Garland of Spartanburg, SC, a resident of Seaford from 1963-1989, died on Dec. 13, 2022 at Hospice House of the Carolinas in Forest City, N.C. Born Feb. 5, 1924, in Village, VA, he was the son of the late James Vincent and Madie Vanlandingham Garland.
Mr. Garland was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and retired from Royster Fertilizer and Chemical Company after 35 years of service. A member of Morningside Baptist Church, he served as a deacon and was a member of the Royal Sunday School Class. He was a member of Westmoreland Masonic Lodge #212, Kinsale, VA, a volunteer at Total Ministries, Mobile Meals Service, and Spartanburg Regional Gibbs Cancer Center. His dedicated and caring spirit was recognized in the community as a recipient of the Caring for the Carolinas Award and the Volunteer of the Year for RSVP (Retired Seniors Volunteers Program).
Survivors include his loving wife of 74 years, Shirley Sayre Garland; daughters, Twyla Lyell Garland Nelson and her husband the Rev. Dr. James J. Nelson of Winston-Salem, NC, and Rebecca Denice Garland Vassy and her husband David of Gaffney, SC; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Monday, Dec. 19, at Morningside Baptist Church Welcome Center. Funeral services followed at the church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. James J. Nelson and the Rev. Dr. Steven R. Owensby. Burial will be in Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery, Callao, VA at a later date.
