Shirley S. Sommers of Laurel passed away on Dec. 5, 2023 at TidalHealth Nanticoke surrounded by her loving family. Shirley was born on March 3, 1935 to the late Norman Stoakley and Ida Boyce Stoakley. While she was in high school, she worked for Heath Pharmacy and later went into the banking industry working for Farmers Bank for over 12 years. Lastly she retired working for the Registry of Will and Court of Chancery after 24 years of service, and she proudly served as the Deputy for Harvey Donovan and David Wilson.
Shirley was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, and enjoyed cross stitching, crafts, and working on her computer. Her favorite pastime was taking rides and going out to dinner with Danny and Brenda Brunner. Mrs. Shirley wanted to extend a special thank you to her dearest family, Danny and Brenda Brunner. She and Bill loved you dearly and thank you for always helping them with everything they ever needed. They enjoyed all the special car rides up and down the beautiful Eastern Shore and the delicious dinners you shared with them. Your love and support will be forever cherished.
Shirley is survived by her loving cousins, Danny and Brenda Brunner. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband William “Bill” Sommers; and her siblings, Mary Frances Stoakley, Jennings Stoakley, and Norma Lee Stauffer, and sister-in-law, Joyce Willoughby.
A visitation will be held from noon- 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14 at the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home Inc., 700 West Street, Laurel, Delaware 19956. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. Pastor Dean Perdue will officiate. Interment will be held at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel, Delaware.
