Mildred E. Steen of Laurel passed away on April 3, 2022 surrounded by her loving family and loved ones. Born in Laurel, she was the daughter of the late Greensbury and Ethel Whaley. She was employed by the shirt factory during World War II and also vaccinated chickens. After the passing of her husband Marvin Steen, she continued farming and taking her produce to the “Block” Laurel Farmer’s Market. Mildred was a member of Epworth Church in Laurel, and enjoyed gardening, playing cards with her sister, sisters-in-law and her niece, and also riding the golf cart around the farm.
She is survived by her children, Donald Steen and his companion Nancy, Bonnie Allen and her husband Steve, Brenda Oursler and her husband Mike, Eddie Steen and his wife Susan all of Laurel; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and her sister, Erma Waller.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Marvin Steen; her daughter, Louise Veasey; her siblings, Roland Berry Whaley, Herbert Whaley, Blanche Joseph, Priestley Whaley, Pearl Brittingham, Norval Whaley, and Junior Whaley; daughter-in-law, Dawn Steen; grandchildren, Sheree Price and Donna Hitchens; nieces, Doris Banks and Mary Lou Pearson.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Barbara Hearn, Diane Harrington, and Lisa Mears for the wonderful care they gave their mother. Also, a heartfelt “Thank You” to granddaughter Abby Allen, who was like a nurse to her, visiting four or more times a week to care and comfort her. Mildred looked forward to her visits and appreciated her greatly.
All services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers the family suggest contributions be made in Mrs. Steen’s honor to Central Worship Center, 14545 Sycamore Road, Laurel, Delaware 19956. Arrangements are in the care of the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home in Laurel.
