John S. Melvin, Sr. of Delmar passed away Sunday, July 31, 2022, at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury. He was born Nov. 23, 1948 in Cambridge, a son of the late Clarence and Evelyn Gray Melvin.

John started his career with the Pennsylvania Railroad at a young age and retired after 42 years of service. He was a dedicated provider to his family and loved his life working as an engineer and later a train master, finishing his career with Norfolk Southern Railroad. John was a long-time member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and ran the safety committee for many years for the whole Eastern Shore. He will be remembered for his love of NASCAR, fishing, spending time in the Outer Banks, watching Motor Trend on TV with his loyal pup Padme’ and for the special place he held in his heart for his grandson, Ryan.

He is survived by his dedicated wife of 43 years, Regina “Jean” Melvin; children, John Melvin, Jr. (Teresa) of N. Chesterfield, VA, Christy Parsons (David) of Delmar, Jeff Melvin (Laura) of Delmar, Jared Melvin (Andrea) of Hamilton, VA, Jennifer Melvin of Bel Air, MD, Michael Melvin (Andrea) of Denver, NC, Christine Melvin of Delmar, John Honess of Delmar and Riley Honess of Hebron, MD; brothers, Norris Melvin (Charlotte) and Bill Melvin (Edna); a sister-in-law, Phyllis Melvin; grandsons Ryan and Nathan; granddaughters Ava, Julia and Nora and numerous other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard “Snooky” Gray.

Services will be held privately.
