Irene Gaby Dodson left this earth on Aug. 24, 2022. Irene was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a lifelong resident of Seaford until relocating to Md. to be closer to her children.
Irene was a graduate of Salisbury Teaching College which kicked off a lifetime commitment to teaching. Irene retired from the Laurel School District after 37 years in the elementary school system. She was also a teacher and mentor at Delaware Technical College and received her Master’s Degree in Adolescent Counseling prior to her retirement.
She will be remembered fondly for her love and devotion to her family and friends, as well as her passion for all living creatures (except rodents). As the matriarch of the family, she never let one of us want for anything. She was always there for the important events, a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. Not one holiday went by without sending a card. She was an avid reader, loved cross-stitch, puzzles, having lunch with her friends and listening to Elvis.
Irene is survived by her sister, Jo Gaby Schultz and Jo’s family of Ron, Veronica and Michael Schultz; her children Marcia Dodson Black with son-in-law Dennis Black and Andrew Dodson; her granddaughter Kaitlin Opie with grandson-in-law Tim Opie, granddaughter Elizabeth Dodson, and her great-grandchildren Taylor and Madison Opie.
There will be a celebration in honor of Irene on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. at Conley’s United Methodist Church, 22150 Robinsonville Road in Lewes. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Delaware SPCA or Delaware Humane Society.
