Hershell Gene Tice of Laurel passed away on Jan. 22, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving daughters. Born in Laurel, he was the son of the late Hershell A. Tice and Elizabeth Rhodes Tice. He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a medic. Gene was retired as a Railroad Engineer for Conrail, with 36 years of dedicated service. He was a member of the Jehovah Witness Church.
Gene enjoyed farming, woodworking, spoiling his cats and dogs, but most importantly he adored his family and will be remembered for being a very loving and caring father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Gene is survived by his daughters, Patricia Green, Heather Johnson and her husband Dave, and Amy West and her husband Huey; grandchildren, Melissa Johnson (Donnie), Kyle Riggin (Lanai), Kenneth Tice, Jr. (Kris), Michael Fletcher (Natalie), Ricki Truitt (Zach), Josh Quillen (Skylar), and Jeri Alexander (Jared); 12 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; special friends, Fletcher Hanks, Ellen Zinziger, and Rudy Collins; his beloved cat “Fizzel” and several nieces and nephews also survive him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Patricia A. Tice; son, Kenneth Tice, Sr.; and his brothers, Kenneth Tice and Robert Tice, Sr.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4 from noon-1 p.m. at the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home, 700 West Street, Laurel, DE 19956. A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Pastor Joe LeCates will officiate.
