Herbert Fortune Cummings passed away peacefully on Jan. 5, 2023 at home surrounded by his family. He was born Sept. 16, 1930 in Greensboro N.C. He was the son of the late William and Emma Cummings.

In 1948, while visiting his brother, Herbert met the love of his life Doris Lee Lyons. They were married on April 2, 1949 and settled in Delaware.

Herbert worked for the city of Seaford Electric Department as a lineman and retired after 38 years. During his career he also could be found installing TV antennas and providing tree and lawn care. He continued Herb’s Lawn Care Service following retirement until the age of 83.

He was fondly known to some as “Buck,” “Diesel,” and “Mr. Cutting Grass.” He took pride in his work, his home, and providing for his family. He loved traditional country music, old cars, and watching western TV shows, but his favorite was Andy Griffith. He was a member of the Seaford Volunteer Fire Company, Gethsemane Masonic Lodge, and Wesley United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents Herbert was also preceded in death by his siblings India, Theodore, Mark, Calvin, and William Cummings, Geraldine Younts, and daughter-in-law Donna Cummings.

Herbert is survived by his wife Doris of 73 years; his sons Richard Cummings (Mona) of LaMirada Ca., Danny Cummings of Seaford, and Shelley Welch (Stuart) of Felton; six grandchildren Brian Cummings, Stacey Seilheimer (Jeremy), Michael Cummings (Alison), Jessica Smith (Mitchell), Angela Childs, Courtney Nelson (Bret); four great-grandchildren Elisa Harris, Morgan and Shawn Seilheimer, and Noah Childs.

The family would like to thank the staff at VITAS Hospice for their guidance, kindness, and compassionate care. Special thanks to Patty, Dee, Diana, Heather, Tia, and Stacey.

Funeral services will be on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. at the Cranston Funeral Home, 300 N. Shipley St. in Seaford, where friends may call from 1 to 2. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 22025 Atlanta Rd., Seaford DE 19973.
