Mrs. Harriett A. Hickman MacVeigh passed away on May 14, 2023 at TidalHealth Nanticoke in Seaford after a long illness. She retired in 1997 from the Laurel School District, having served the students there since 1968. After her retirement, she was employed by the town of Delmar, MD/DE, for five years.
Much of her life was dedicated to serving youth, she was youth choir director at Antioch Methodist Church in Princess Anne and of Union Methodist Church in Federalsburg, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was member and leader of the 4-H Clubs of America and was awarded membership in the prestigious All-Stars of that organization. She held memberships in many organizations, among them the Federalsburg VFW Auxiliary Post #5246 (lifetime member), the Laurel Post #19 American Legion Auxiliary, the Delaware Association of Educational Office Professionals (lifetime member), the National and the Delaware Educational Association, Retired School Personnel of Delaware, the Girl Scouts of America, the Lunch Bunch, Friends of the Laurel Library, the Laurel Senior Center, and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. She was a mentor for the Connecting Generations Organization and the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. She was a volunteer instructor for the American Red Cross and held offices in the Parent Teachers Association, and the Lionesses and the Jaycettes of Federalsburg. She was the corresponding secretary for the Diamond State Reading Association and a member of the International Reading Association.
Many will remember her as a Girl Scout Troop Leader, Day Camp Director, Trainer of Adults, Consultant, Outdoor Program Coordinator and Volunteer Trainer with the Girl Scouts of America, the Red Cross and the American Camping Association. She was very proud of having received the highest rewards offered by the Girl Scout Organization; the Juliette Lowe Humanitarian Award, the Thanks Badge, the Thanks II Badge, the Outstanding Leader and Outstanding Volunteer Trainer/Facilitator of adults from New York to Virginia and valued the acquaintances she made through this experience.
Harriett was the daughter of the late John and Frances Hickman of Princess Anne. She was preceded in death in 2008, by her husband and partner, Pete (who she married in Germany in 1955) and in 1996, by her sister, Mrs. Joyce H. Perdue. She is survived by her son, Jay MacVeigh of Laurel, her daughter and son-in-law, Melody and John Carroll of Sparta, Tennessee, two grandchildren, Johnny and Emily Carroll, her daughter, Maria and partner, John Thiel, of Delmar, Del., many nieces, nephews, relatives, and a host of valued friendships.
