George William Lonas of Gainesville, Fla. (formerly of Seaford and Kensington, Md.) passed away at home on Tuesday, June 29, 2021. He was born on Feb. 22, 1931 in Mount Jackson, Va. He was the son of late Lillian and Charles Bowen.

George graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda, Md. He started his career with Safeway Stores, Inc. at the age of 14 years as a grocery bagger and worked his way into management positions and opened the Seaford store in 1964. He worked for Safeway for 50 years.

He was active with United Way and Seaford Lions Club, participating annually in the chorus of the Lions Club Show.  He was a fan of the Washington Redskins (HTTR) and attended numerous games throughout his youth and adult life. In retirement he enjoyed following the University of Florida football and basketball teams. He had a passion for gardening and landscaping as well as cooking. He was a lifelong member of the Democratic party and was thrilled to see Joseph Biden become the 46th President of the United States.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Steven Lonas, and brother, Charles W. Lonas. He is survived by his sisters, Dorothy Seligh of Silver Spring, Md., Betty Schell of Onley, Md.; children, Barry W. Lonas of Largo, FL, Theresa Moody (Stewart) of Saint Petersburg, FL, and Joanna Brown (Thomas) of Bayard, Del.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his caretaker and adopted son, Willie Irving, of Gainesville, FL.
