George “Dutch” Howard Durig of Seaford passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on June 5, 2023. He was born the youngest of seven children, to Lewis and Bertha Durig on Aug. 13, 1939, in his hometown of New Martinsville, WV.
A love for guiding and inspiring children in academics, sports and in life, brought him to Delaware in 1966. In Delaware he built the very first football team that Greenwood High School had ever seen and coached them through an undefeated first season. Here he also brought his first two blessings into the world; his only son Ted, and his first daughter Leigh. Through many changes in life, he eventually found the woman that would love him through the end of his days, Ria. Together they brought his youngest, Maggie, into the world. Though not always an easy life, Dutch got to end his time on earth knowing he was loved by family, friends, and past students alike. His faith never wavered, and we can all be at peace knowing he is now watching over us from above, at peace.
He is survived by his wife Maria “Ria”, his sister June (Gary), his son Ted (Mary), his daughters Leigh (Dave) and Maggie (John) and his grandchildren Connor, Kate, Eddie and Eamon, along with a loving extended family of brother and sister in-laws and nieces and nephews that he loved like his own.
Funeral Services were held on Monday, June 12 at Cranston Funeral Home in Seaford, burial followed funeral services at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Seaford.
