Elwood “Bake” Baker of Laurel passed away on Sept. 20, 2022 at Acts Manor House in Seaford. Born in Frankford, he was the son of the late Clarence Baker and Emma Timmons Baker. Elwood graduated from Laurel High School’s class of 1959. After graduating, he proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. 

In his early career, he worked for Wharton & Barnard in the auto parts division in the delivery and parts counter; then secondly working for Standard Register; and after retiring from that career, his retirement jobs included working for Tyndall’s Pipe and Patio, and Bargain Bills Flea Market. 

Elwood was a 55-year “Life-time member” of the Laurel Fire Department; serving an assistant treasurer, trustee, 20-year active fireman, and serving 10 years in the Delaware State Fire Police. He loved to take care of many feline animals, garden, and work outdoors. Elwood is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Barbara Boyce Baker; daughters, Diane Patchett (Chris), Judy Evans, and Irene Baker; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, C. Edward Baker, Viola Kinnikin, Mary Hearn, and Helen Adams, and his grandson, Christopher Patchett III. 

A viewing was held on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at the Laurel Fire Department. The funeral service followed with the interment held in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested in Mr. Baker’s honor to the Laurel Fire Department, C/O Fire Police, 205 West 10th Street, Laurel, Delaware 19956.
