Ellen Jane Brittingham of Laurel passed away Monday, June 19, 2023 at Delaware Hospice surrounded by her loving family. Born in Clarksville, TN, she moved to Delaware at age 3 with her family. E.J. was the daughter of Thomas A. and Ellen G. Davey Banks.
E.J. graduated from Laurel High School in 1954. She married Charles B. Brittingham in 1957 on Valentine’s Day.
She worked at DuPont for 30 years. She loved riding horses, stock car races, Nascar #43 and #24, her favorite. She enjoyed camping, hot air ballooning, and making crafts. Most of all she loved sitting by her fish pond reading.
E.J. was a member of the American Legion Post 19 in Laurel, where she played shuffle board with her Legion family.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Charles B. Brittingham, daughter Ellen Marie Willin, son Charles T. “Chuck” Brittingham, Sr., brothers Thomas and Richard “Dick” Banks, and her significant other Robert “Bobby” Coulborne of 27 years.
E.J. was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her daughters Brenda Brittingham (Britt), and Linda Carter (Conrad) of Laurel; grandchildren Elizabeth Willin of Seaford, Caleb Willin IV (Stephanie) of Bridgeville, Charles T. “Chuck” Brittingham, Jr. (Ashley) of Hebron, Md., Casey Wright (Brady) of Ellendale; great-grandchildren Jayson, TeShaun and Tiana Willin, Jace and Alyssa Brittingham, Blaire Wright and Caleb Willin V, Rob and Mitch Brittingham; stepchildren Robert Coulborne (Terri), Theresa C. Bowden (Tommy), Keith Coulbourne (Denise); one she called her own, Suzanne Carmean; daughter-in-law Tina Howard, and nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held on July 23 at the Laurel American Legion Post 19 from 1 – 4 p.m.
