Charlotte L. Walter of Delmar passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on February 15, 1933 in Delmar, a daughter of the late J. Lee Phillips and Marie Watson Phillips.
Charlotte lived her whole life on her beloved Family Pride Farm in Delmar. She grew up working on the farm and was proud to be a farmer’s daughter and wife. Charlotte graduated from Delmar High School where she played field hockey, softball, and basketball. She went on to earn her teaching degree from the University of Delaware. She taught physical education and coached at Seaford High School for several years, before finishing her teaching career at Westside Intermediate in Hebron.
After her coaching days ended, she enjoyed refereeing high school field hockey games. She was a life member of Snethen United Methodist Church where she served as the financial secretary and in many other capacities. Her faith was tremendously important to her and she loved her weekly Bible studies. Charlotte was an excellent cook, and her family and friends will remember her cornbread, crust, and peanut butter fudge. She was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to her grandchildren. She never missed a game if Carlee or Robbie were playing, from little league through high school and college.
Family vacations to the Outer Banks were special to her and left her family with many fond memories. She will be remembered for her love of card games with family and friends. Her competitive spirit remained until the very end as she beat her grandson-in-law at a game of rummy less than a week before she passed. Charlotte will be remembered for her quick wit and sassiness. She will be sorely missed and remembered as a loving mother, mom-mom, and friend to many.
Charlotte is survived by her daughter, Terry Budd and husband Gary; granddaughter, Carlee Ellis and husband Skit; and grandson, Robbie Budd, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Trader; second husband, William Walter; and her brother, Ralph Phillips.
A visitation for family and friends was held on Sunday, July 16 at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, and also on Monday, July 17. The funeral service also took place on Monday. Interment followed at St. Stephen’s Cemetery in Delmar.
Memorial contributions may be sent in her memory to Snethen United Methodist Church, c/o Jan Frey, 4203 Delmar Road, Delmar, DE 19940.
