Filbert F. Lewis of Chatsworth, Ga. passed away March 20, 2026 at Parkside Budd Terrace Nursing Home in Atlanta, Ga.
Born in Milford on Dec. 19, 1947, he grew up in his hometown of Bridgeville. After graduating from Bridgeville High School, he left his hometown to attend Lee College in Cleveland, TN.
After graduating from Lee College, Filbert spent 32 years teaching in the Murray County School System, earning a Masters of Education from West Georgia College along the way. Most of his career was spent as a physical education teacher at Spring Place Elementary. Filbert loved teaching and nothing pleased him more than meeting former students and hearing how “Coach Lewis” and his P.E. class made school enjoyable.
He loved to travel and talk to people. Filbert Lewis never met a stranger.
Filbert was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Julia, of 38 years; parents, Mildred and Francis Lewis of Bridgeville, and sister, Ludella David and husband, Don of Venice, Fla.
He is survived by his sister, Beverly Dalton and her husband, Lenny of Shelton, CT and his brother, Byron Lewis of Bridgeville. He is also survived by nieces and a nephew.
We wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to his long time friend, Gary Garland, for all his support for our brother and the Lewis family.
A memorial service is planned for a later date.
