Gary William Flood of Laurel, passed away on Nov. 29, 2025, with his wife and family by his side. He was born on July 8, 1950, in Alexandria, Va. to the late James W. Flood and Estella Moore Flood.
Gary’s life was defined by service, courage, and an unwavering dedication to others. Gary served his country and joined the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1972. While he was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base, he had the opportunity to fly on Air Force One. He later served in the Air Force Reserve at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska. Gary served as a police officer for 43 years at the Seaford Police Department, starting as a patrolman and working his way through the ranks to being appointed as Chief of Police. During his career, he shared a strong bond with his loyal K9 partner, Major, whose companionship was one of his greatest joys. He also helped establish and grow a Special Tactics and Response (S.T.A.R.) team. As a respected police chief, he led with integrity and compassion, earning the trust of those he served and the admiration of those who served beside him.
Gary was a lifetime member of the Laurel Fire Department where he also was a member of the dive team. He enjoyed roller hockey, skiing at Greek Peak, playing his banjo and earning his black belt in karate. He also had a passion for horses, Bluegrass music, and traveling to Winchester, Gettysburg, and Nashville with Debby. Gary’s greatest joy in life was the love he shared with his family. A love that was so deep, constant, and unwavering. His devotion to Debby was like no other-she was truly the center of his world. Not a day went by without Gary telling her, “You are my everything, and you will always be my baby,” words he meant with all his heart. He cherished her dearly and made it his mission to ensure she always felt loved, valued, and treasured. He loved his children, Steven and Heather, with immense pride, and his grandchildren were the lights of his life, bringing him endless happiness.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife of almost 43 years Debby Roughton Flood; son, Steven Flood and his wife Bethany; and their children, Chase and Logan; daughter, Heather Ruark and her husband Todd; and their children Austin, Landon, and Lauren; daughter, Tammy Bragdon and her children Kylie, Jenna, and Hunter.
A viewing will be held on Friday, Dec 5 from 10 a.m.-noon at the Laurel Fire Department, 205 W. 10th Street, Laurel, Delaware 19956. The funeral service with police and fire honors will begin at noon at the firehouse. Pastor Larry Whaley will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery- Laurel.
