Howard Ezra Gilpin, Jr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on Nov. 29, 2024. Born on Oct. 2, 1934, in Greer, West Virginia, he grew up in Cumberland, Md. before joining the U.S. Army in 1953. After completing his service, he was accepted to Frostburg Teacher’s College, graduating in 1960.
He is survived by his wife Darlene Catherine (Loar) Gilpin; son Howard Gilpin III and his wife Dr. Katherine LeJeune; daughter Lori (Gilpin) Hoch and her husband Keller Hoch; three grandchildren, Kelsey (Hoch) Cozza and her husband Capt. Hayes Cozza, Alyssa Bailey Hoch, Tobin Gilpin; and two great-grandsons Jordy and Reece Cozza; all of whom brought him immense joy and pride.
A dedicated educator and school administrator in Frederick County, Md., Howard devoted his career to ensuring every child had the opportunity to succeed. He retired in 1993 and had always focused on providing the best opportunities for those in his care. Education was not only his profession, but his lifelong belief — and he worked tirelessly to ensure that his own children and grandchildren had the resources they needed to succeed and achieve their own goals.
Howard had an insatiable curiosity about the world around him. An avid reader, he spent countless hours learning about new ideas, current events, and history, always eager to expand his knowledge and share his insights with those he loved.
Car trips with Howard were always an experience; interesting birds, historical markers, cows all facing the same direction in a field – nothing went unnoticed. And you could always count on an “all clear from my side” at every intersection, a remnant of his Army days.
Known for his generosity, he expressed his love through actions, particularly in his commitment to providing for his family. His thoughtful nature, unwavering support, and deep love for his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren defined his life. He could be counted on to be ring-side for any event involving his wife, children or grandchildren.
A man of integrity, Howard was also known for his quiet sense of humor and his warmth. His presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him, as he left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to be part of his life.
Funeral services will take place on Friday, Dec. 6 at noon with a public visitation from 11 a.m. to noon at Cranston Funeral Home, 300 N Shipley Street in Seaford. Burial will take place following services in Bridgeville Cemetery.
