Virginia L. Christopherson of Delmar passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2023 at Delmar Nursing and Rehab Center.

She was born on May 27, 1929 in Oak Hall, Va., a daughter of the late Avery and Mary (Phillips) Shockley.

Virginia left school at a young age to cook and care for her many brothers and sisters. She worked alongside her sister at local farms working in the fields and picking watermelons and also working as a seamstress at a few garment companies in the Delmar and Salisbury area. She was a collector of washbowls and enjoyed making ceramics that she would give as gifts to family. She made many Santas and snowmen for the holiday season. She was a wonderful cook, some of her specialties included macaroni and cheese with tomatoes, dumplings and whoopie pies. She was also a wonderful baker of cakes and even took lessons to decorate them for special occasions. She often shared her cakes with the mail carriers. Virginia was a longtime member of Line United Methodist Church in Delmar.

She is survived by her children, Ruth Wolfgang and her husband Edwin “PeeWee,” Peggy Adams and her husband Sonny, Ernest Layfield, and William Layfield; grandchildren, Robbie Layfield, Chris Layfield, Billy Layfield, Lori Baylis, Scott Adams, Wendy Carey, Michael Wolfgang, Kimmy Wolfgang, and Russell Wolfgang; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard Shockley, a sister, Rachel McHone; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert D. Christopherson; a son, Charles Layfield; brothers, Avery, Melvin, Morris, and Eddie Shockley; and sisters, Emma Austin, Peggy Robertson, and Barbara Workman.

A funeral service was held on Friday, March 10 at Line United Methodist Church in Delmar. Pastor Amy Willey officiated. The interment followed in Odd Fellow Cemetery in Laurel.
