The Sussex Tech varsity boys’ soccer team rallied from a 4-2 deficit with 6:29 left in regulation to tie the score and send last Thursday’s game at Woodbridge into overtime. The Ravens’ Alex Garcia Velasquez scored his third goal of the contest with 1:13 left in the second overtime period to give his team a 5-4 road win.

“I love sharing this accomplishment with the team, and I love playing the sport,” said Garcia Velasquez. “It’s a humbling moment, but we’re definitely going to push back and keep going.”

Woodbridge scored first when Logan Sears headed the ball into the goal off a throw-in from Andrew Amalfitano with 32:15 left in the first half. Garcia Velasquez netted his first goal off a feed from Elmer Ramos-Mendez on a give-and-go to knot the score at 1-1 (21:47).

Sussex Tech took the lead on a goal by Jared Laz off an assist from Frankly Roblero Perez with 18:50 remaining in the half. The Raiders’ Jenrry Santos-Gonzalez knotted the score at 2-2 (12:07), and it remained that way going into half-time.

The Raiders regained the lead with 31:43 remaining in the game on a kick by Eli Chavez-Chavez. Woodbridge doubled up its lead on a goal by Brandon Lopez Perez off a header from Sears (6:29).

Roblero-Perez netted a goal on a penalty kick with 5:56 left in the game to make the score 4-3. Garcia Velasquez tallied his second goal to tie the score at 4-4 with 4:40 remaining in regulation. Sussex Tech’s Bradley Perez Garcia cleared the ball after it got past goalkeeper Daniel Teffeau to keep the game knotted going into overtime.

Woodbridge had three corners in the first overtime period but could not find the net. Garcia Velasquez went one-on-one with Raiders’ goalkeeper Diego Bustos-Dominguez in the second period, but Bustos-Dominguez made the stop. Garcia Velasquez came to score his third goal, the game-winner, with 1:13 left in OT.

Sears led Woodbridge with one goal and one assist; Eli Chavez-Chavez, Jenrry Santos-Gonzalez, Brandon Lopez Ramirez each scored one goal; Andrew Amalfitano and Logan Marchincin dished out one assist apiece; and Bustos-Dominguez made eight saves.

Garcia Velasquez scored three goals; Frankly Roblero-Perez had one goal and two assists; Jared Laz netted one goal; Dominick Giardina dished out an assist; and Teffeau made five saves.

Caesar Rodney 4, Sussex Tech 1- Laz scored off a feed from Roblero-Perez and Teffeau had five saves in the Ravens’ road loss on Tuesday.
