The Woodbridge Blue Raiders football team has scored over 30 points in each of their past two games, and Friday night proved no different. The Raiders were matched up against conference rival Delmar Wildcats and finished the game with a 35-0 victory. In doing so, Woodbridge celebrated knowing that the win meant bringing the Kiwanis Trophy to the school’s trophy display case. The winner of the game houses the trophy for an entire year. The tradition has existed since 1959.

In his post-game comments, Woodbridge Head Coach Marvin Dooley, mentioned the trophy: “We are so ecstatic in bringing the trophy back to our house. Delmar has always been a great program, so we don’t take beating them lightly. This game meant a lot because we have faced a lot of adversity this year. We have played some good football, but have lost several close games. I think the team has played better than the record indicates. The kids started slowly, but they eventually responded, so I give them credit. They stayed the course.”

On Woodbridge’s first possession, at the 9:58 mark, Delmar defensive back Avieon Waples stepped in front of an intended pass for Raiders wide receiver Kamryn DeShields and intercepted the ball on the 49 yard-line. The Wildcats moved the ball all the way to the 23 yard-line, but their progress stalled on a fourth-and-eight play. Woodbridge regained possession as the first quarter came to a close with no score.

In the second quarter, the two teams traded possessions until the 1:36 mark, when quarterback Daulton McCabe launched a 49-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kamryn DeShields. Later, with only seconds left in the quarter, DeShields caught a 30-yard pass for a touchdown while falling backwards in the end zone. The Raiders led the entire game and went into the halftime break up 14-0.

At the 6:56 mark in the third quarter, wide receiver Christian Artson caught a 10-yard pass in the end zone, making the score 21-0. The Raiders would score two more times in the fourth quarter, basically putting the game out of reach for the Wildcats. At the 10:59 mark, the Woodbridge passing attack struck again with a seven-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jaimere Jackson. The final touchdown of the game was on a 22-yard pass to DeShields, his second of the contest.

Dooley reminded his team that the season isn’t over. “Next week we play Lake Forest, one of the best teams in the state. It’s going to be a dogfight, and we have to rise up. It’s a great opportunity. We can do it. It’s not going to be easy. They are going to be favored, but we can play with them, score against them, and stop them. It’s up to us. You all should be proud of yourselves,” he said.

Woodbridge’s current record is 2-5. The Raiders play at Lake Forest in Felton on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. Delmar’s record is 2-5. The Wildcats play at home against Indian River on Friday at 7 p.m.
