Nancy Jean (Whitmer) Schutz passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025 surrounded by family and friends.

Nancy was born on Jan. 10, 1945 in Manassas, Va. to her parents, Marvin and Edith (Reid) Fox. She graduated from Osborn High School and worked various jobs in the Washington D.C, metro area. In 1969, she married Beverly (“Plug”) Whitmer. They had two children and moved to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in 1978.

In 1988, Nancy was remarried to Andy Tom Schutz and she gained a stepdaughter. Nancy and Andy moved from Woodstock, Va. to the Eastern Shore in 1990, living in both Delmar, Maryland and Delaware. Andy worked for various poultry companies, which gave them many opportunities to travel the world, which she truly enjoyed.

Nancy was a devoted and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her faith was strong and she loved serving the Lord. Before she got sick, she loved sending out monthly cards with her jokes inside the card. She loved her church family, but even more, she loved being a ‘nanny’. In this role, she was a wonderful mother and grandmother who was always there when we needed her the most, offering support, wisdom, laughter and love in abundance. Nancy was a friend to many, and a cherished member to every community she lived in. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness and service.

Her husband, her parents, and her sister (Marie Carter) preceded Nancy in death. She is survived by her sister, Shirley Utz of Charles Town, WV; her son, David (Deanna) Whitmer of Millsboro; daughter, Kimberly (Carlos “Tate”) Simmons of Seaford; step-daughter, Yvonne (Tim) Olive of Richmond, Va; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; also, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. We are comforted by the knowledge that families are forever and look forward to the day we are reunited with her.

To commemorate her incredible journey and to celebrate the love she spread, a funeral service will be held in her honor at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Seaford (800 Fleetwood Drive Seaford, DE 19973) on Thursday, January 30 at 11 a.m. Prior to the funeral service, a viewing will take place at the same location from 10-11 a.m. A graveside service will be held on Friday, Jan. 31 at noon at the Isaiah Clem Cemetery (1532 S Fort Valley Rd Ft Valley, VA 22652) in Ft. Valley, Virginia.

Her family would like to thank everyone for the love and support they have received during this time and invite all who knew her to join us in remembering a truly remarkable woman. In lieu of flowers, Nancy has requested that donations be made to the American Heart Association.
