The Delmar varsity softball team, winners of the Henlopen South division, hosted the Henlopen North champion Sussex Central team last Friday. The Golden Knights broke up a scoreless game with two runs in the fourth inning before adding one in the sixth and two in the seventh for a 5-0 win.
Sussex Central threatened in the top of the second when Emma Jackson hit a leadoff single and Ava Brock added a one-out single to put runners on first and second. Senior Avery Savage hit a seeing eye single past shortstop, but Jackson was caught in a rundown between third and home before being tagged out and a popup ended the inning with no runs on the board.
Delmar’s Macy Rickards and Olivia Smith each drew a walk through the first three innings, but the team could not collect a hit against Sussex Central hurler Timora Hall.
Sussex Central rallied in the top of the fourth when Kimora Harris hit a leadoff single and Jackson added a base hit. The runners moved up on a sac bunt by Lauren Myers and Harris scored on a ground out. Avery Savage added an RBI double for a 2-0 lead.
Harris tripled and scored on an error in the top of the sixth (3-0). In the seventh, Ashlyn Troxler reached on an infield single with two away and Adeline Lutz homered to make it 5-0.
Rickards led off the bottom of the inning with a single for the Wildcats’ first hit, but the team was unable to plate the runner.
