The Laurel Little League season kicked off with a day parade and opening day ceremony last Friday night. The league dedicated the Major League all-star softball field in memory of Wayne Price, who was also named the league’s Volunteer of the Year.
The league also honored last year’s Laurel Junior League all-star baseball team, which won the Delaware District III championship.
Brandy Givens made the presentation to Price’s family: Donna, Amy, Amanda, Kylee, and TJ. Price coached his kids and grandkids and had signed up to coach in the league again this year. He served as Vice President of Softball and on the Little League Board and also coached softball at Delaware Tech, Laurel Middle and High School and the Storm, X-plosion, and East Coast Elite travel teams.
“It’s hard to imagine a time when softball wasn’t part of his life,” Givens said of Price.“It’s our time to say ‘Mr. Wayne, thank you for all you’ve done’.”
Trenton Timmons and Kendall Hastings threw out the first pitch to Ian Messick,
Leah Edwards Hunt sang the National Anthem, and Rep. Tim Dukes, who spoke during the ceremony along with Laurel Little League President Mike Snead, Board Member Bethany Copeland, and Givens, gave the closing prayer.
