Wilfredo Vargas, Sr. of Bridgeville, formerly of New York City and Philadelphia, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024. Wilfredo was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Jan. 29, 1954, son of the late Guadalupe and Alicia (Ilarraza) Vargas.
Wilfredo grew up in Manhattan, N.Y. A high school graduate, he proudly served with the United States Army enlisting in 1971 as an avionics specialist stationed in Germany. While in the Army he continued his education at a local community college. Receiving an honorable discharge in July 1974. Wilfredo then began his career working for the Department of the Navy at the Philadelphia shipyard for many years.
Wilfredo was a member of the American Legion Post 6 in Seaford. In his spare time, he loved Latin dancing, playing pool, and was a car enthusiast.
He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Janet Vargas (Handy); son Wilfredo Vargas Jr. of New Jersey; daughters Vivian Vargas Gomez her husband John and their children Genesis, Elijah, and Emanuel Gomez of Florida; and Melissa Vargas of Philadelphia. He is also survived by stepdaughter Tammy R. Grazioli and her husband John of Severna Park, Md. and their children, Sophie and Nicholas; and stepson William Creighton Gulledge of Richmond, Va.; sister Carmen Vargas of Philadelphia; nephews, Adonis and Devin Zabala; his great- nephew Adonis Zabala, Jr.; and an aunt Soccoro and husband Chollo Machado of Puerto Rico.
An interment with military honors was held on Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
