Thomas Lee Rippon Sr., a proud veteran and dedicated community leader, passed away on Jan. 7, 2025, in Seaford. Born on Oct. 15, 1944, in Cape Charles, Va., to Severn and Eleanor Rippon, Thomas lived a life marked by service and commitment.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Meriam Rippon; his three children from his first marriage to Margaret Shreeves Rippon (who passed away in 2000): Thomas Lee Jr and Tonya Rippon, Virginia and Brett Friedman, and Margaret Rippon and Casey Holodick; stepsons Darin and Renee Powell and David and Holly Powell; and grandchildren Ashley, Madison, Alexander, Thomas, Jackson, Keller, and Grace. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Gordon, John, and Smith.
Thomas devoted 28 years to serving his country as a combat medic during the Vietnam War and later during Operation Desert Storm. After retiring from the military, he continued his legacy of hard work as a railroad worker. His life was defined by his dedication to both his career and the causes he held dear.
A passionate advocate for veterans, Thomas was an active member of veterans’ organizations. He served as Post Commander of Delmar VFW Post #8276 and State Commander for the Department of Maryland, leaving an enduring impact on his community and the lives of countless service members. Thomas was also the Chief of Umpires for Seaford’s Softball Little League, a member of the American Legion and Boy Scouts.
To honor Thomas’s memory and his legacy of service, military honors will be held at Delmar VFW Post #8276 on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. There will be a graveside service held at Capeville Methodist Church Cemetery on Friday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Veterans’ Military Service organization in recognition of the cause he deeply valued.
Thomas’s unwavering dedication to his family, duty and community will forever be cherished by those who knew him. May his memory inspire all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
