The Coast Guard Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) held an establishment ceremony for the Raven Battalion last Thursday at Sussex Tech High School. Among the guests of honor were U.S. Senator Tom Carper and Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath, Commander of the Fifth Coast Guard District.

The ceremony opened with the presentation of colors. The inaugural battalion at Sussex Tech is made up of 70 cadets.

“The future is bright. Sussex Tech prides itself in providing unique opportunities and the Coast Guard does that in our area,” said Sussex Tech Principal Matt Donovan, who said the school looks to provide the best educational opportunities possible to its students.

Sussex Tech Superintendent Dr. Kevin Carson told the cadets that they have the support of the community.

“You have individuals around you that want to make sure that you have every opportunity to succeed,” he said.

Senator Carper told the cadets about his service as a Naval fleet officer.
