Sonja L. McClurkin of Seaford passed away peacefully on Monday, Nov. 22, 2021 at TidalHealth Nanticoke Hospital in Seaford.

Sonja was born Jan. 22, 1938 in Falls Church, Va., a daughter of the late James Don Carroll and Marie James Candle Carroll.

She graduated from Oak Ridge High School in Tennessee. She always enjoyed working with numbers which led her to a career in bookkeeping. She worked several years for Metropolitan Safe and Lock Co., Inc. prior to working for Shoppers Food Warehouse. She was an avid Washington Redskins fan and enjoyed spending her days playing Facebook games. She was fortunate to be able to retire comfortably at a young age while being able to enjoy spending time with family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her greatest treasures and she loved spending time with them and spoiling them as much as she could and truly enjoyed her trip to Styles by Us every Friday to get her hair done.

She is survived by a daughter, Patricia (Trish) McElroy Hall and husband, Robert of Leesburg, Va.; grandchildren, Amanda Nicole Holland and husband, Steven, Matthew Joseph Berard and Abigail Marie Berard; and great-grandchildren, Lamar and Layla Holland. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James J. McElroy (1979) and James J. McClurkin (2010); a daughter, Alice Marie Squerrini; son-in-law, Anthony Squerrini; a brother and three sisters.

A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. at the American Legion, Post 226, 830 Mayo Road, Edgewater, MD 21037, followed by a time of food and fellowship. Interment will be held at a later date at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, Md.
