Russell B. Layton, a devoted and loving husband, father, and faithful member of his community, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 10, 2024 at the Country Rest Home in Greenwood. Born in Salisbury on Feb. 16, 1933, Russell was the son of the late William “Bonard” Layton and Florence Bailey Layton.

After graduating from Laurel High School in 1951, he married the love of his life, Betty Lee Cannon Layton, on Feb. 9, 1954, and together they made their home in Laurel.

Russell answered the call of duty and proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He later graduated from Delaware Technical and Community College in 1974.

Russell started his career with Baltimore Trust Company as a teller. Later he worked for John Torkelson, CPA before becoming the Controller at Pep-Up until his well-deserved retirement.

A faithful member of the Lifeway Church of God in Bridgeville for more than five decades, Russell found joy in serving the Lord as an usher and in various other roles within the church.

A man of deep faith, Russell found immense comfort in his family and cherished every moment spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed tending to his garden and sharing his wisdom and love with those around him.

Russell is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Betty Layton; daughters Sharon Liddell of Milford and Carol Morris and her husband Terry of Millsboro; son David Layton and his wife Cristine of Seaford; and daughter Cherie Layton of Seaford; 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Their love and memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Richard Lee Layton, Sr.

Funeral services were held at the Lifeway Church of God in Bridgeville on Thursday, May 16. Interment followed at Bridgeville Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Lifeway Church of God, 7046 Seashore Highway, in Bridgeville.
