Richard W. “Dick” Miller of Seaford passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021. He was born in Clifton, NJ on April 4, 1937, son of Oscar and Katherine Miller.
Dick spent most of his childhood in Bridgeville, where he graduated from Bridgeville High School with the class of 1955. In May of 1959, he married the love of his life, Dorothy F. Miller.
Dick began his working career in August 1956. He began with Diamond State Telephone Company, which became Bell Atlantic, and lastly Verizon. Dick prided himself on working hard to provide for his family. A fellow co-worker shared he knew help was on the way when he saw a telephone truck and a hairy arm hanging out the window. Dick was widely respected by his managers and peers for his commitment and the knowledge of the job, and for providing reliable landline telephone service throughout Sussex County. He retired from Verizon in December 2001, with over 45 years of service.
One thing from which Dick never retired was farming, and he enjoyed it up until this past spring. He was a member of the Delaware Farm Bureau, Inc., and often shared stories of how it was growing up on the farm in Bridgeville working with his father, which is where he gained his love of the land.
Dick loved visiting with his friends, fellow farmers, neighbors, and family. One could always catch him sharing stories, his knowledge, and playing a joke or two. He enjoyed making people laugh and liked sharing a Laurel Flea Market find with friends and family that showed he was thinking of them. When Dick was younger, he had a large garden and shared his produce with neighbors, co-workers, and friends. In his older years, he cultivated many friendships with neighbors. Dick assisted them with repairs and household needs, and he enjoyed their visits, especially when they came bearing gifts in the form of delicious chicken salad and other foods!
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death his wife, Dottie; his daughters: Tina Lynn and Deborah Ann; his sister-in-law, Joyce F. Lord; his niece, Lisa Lord; and his beloved dog, Pollo. He is survived by his daughters: Katherine M. Fryling (Charles), Sandra M. Bradley (Todd), and Michelle M. Sullivan (Robert); his grandchildren: Charles M. Fryling (Jillian), Katherine A. Fryling, Hannah E. Bradley, Natalie M. Fryling, and Sarah K. Bradley; his great-grandchildren: Benjamin, Nathan, and Marshall Fryling; his sister, Eileen Craft (Donald); and his nephews: David Craft, Brian Craft, and Skip Lord.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, Oct. 22 beginning at 11 a.m. at the place Dick loved to be most, his farm. Services will begin at 11:30 a.m., and a visitation will continue until 2 p.m. Please wear comfortable clothes and flat shoes.
