Mary Elizabeth Sowell of Delmar passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at her home.
She was born on Dec. 27, 1930 in Wilson, Arkansas, a daughter of the late Bessie Mae (Rogers) White and Thomas A. White.
Mary was a loving homemaker who truly enjoyed raising her family. In her later years she was able to care for her grandchildren when they were younger. She was a wonderful cook and her family will remember her fudge she always made for special holidays. Through the years she was a talented dressmaker and made clothes for her family and sewed everything by hand. She also enjoyed quilting and a piece of her remains in every handmade quilt her children and grandchildren now have to treasure. Mary loved flowers and gardening and was also a talented artist who had a knack for pencil sketching. She will be sorely missed and remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a cat-lover.
She is survived by her children, Lanny J. Sowell (Karen) of Delmar, Cindy Parks of Laurel, and Wesley A. Sowell (Marianna) of Laurel; a stepdaughter, Patricia Sowell of Athens, Alabama; grandchildren, Kristina Akin (Greg), Casey Sowell, Amanda Witt, Cameron Sowell, and Natalie Sowell; great-grandchildren, Ruby Elizabeth Akin, and Abigail Grace Akin; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, M.J. Sowell, who passed in 1979; brothers, J.D. White and Cleatus White; and sisters, Jessie Lee Brown, Bessie Mae Robertson and Adelle McKamey.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 15 at 2 p.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Melson’s Cemetery in Delmar.
