It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Leo Powell Patilla, who left this world peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, May 28, 2026. Born on Feb. 17, 1933, in Pikesville, KY, Leo was a son of the late Andrew and Wanda Patilla. He resided for many years in Delmar, where he cultivated a life filled with love, dedication, and service.

Leo proudly graduated from Delmar High School before serving his country in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956. He was aboard the USS Hancock. After serving his time in the U.S. Navy, he went on to pursue his career at DuPont where he retired after 30 plus years as a mechanical engineer.

A devoted family man, Leo cherished his children: daughter, Kelly Bayly (Robert) and son, Jeffery Patilla, along with his grandchildren, Mindi Toppin (Dynell), Jordan Bayly, and Autumn Ralph (Brennen). He was a loving great-grandfather to Logan Kimble, Jayla Kimble, Mekhei Bayly, Brinlee Ralph, and Keegan Ralph. He is also survived by his former wife and mother to his children, Barbara Messick, along with several nieces and nephews. He will be truly missed by all, especially the family dog who he became very fond of, “Mazy”. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores Patilla; and siblings, Edward Patilla, Thomas Patilla, Wanda Herzens, Louise Pringle, and Gertrude Younger.

An active member of the Delmar community, Leo was involved with the Delmar VFW Post 8276, where he forged lasting friendships. He had a profound love for the outdoors, relishing times spent camping, fishing, and crabbing with loved ones.

Funeral services will be held at Short Funeral Home on Thursday, June 4, beginning with a visitation at 11:30 a.m., followed by the service at 12:30 p.m. Leo will be laid to rest following military honors at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to hospice nurses, Kim, Brandie, and Jessica, for their care and compassion given to Leo and his family.

Memorial contributions in memory of Leo may be sent to Accent Care Hospice, 416 Williams St #3, Milford, DE 19963.

Leo Powell Patilla will be remembered for his unwavering love for family, his commitment to his community, and his zest for life.

He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and joy that will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him. One of Leo’s favorite sayings was one day at a time, which is exactly how he lived his life.

Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home of Delmar.
