Joan Fay Lawton of Laurel passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021 at her home surrounded by her family.

Born in Ridgely, Md. on March 6, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Emory George and Florence Cohee Gottwals.

In July 1964, Joan married John Wayne Lawton. They made their home in Georgia, Florida and other areas of the country, including the Bethel/Laurel area to where they more recently returned. She had worked as a dental assistant and in horticulture since she loved gardening and was known to have a green thumb. Joan and Wayne enjoyed riding their motorcycle and attending horseshoe tournaments. A lady with a great personality, she loved going to the beach, camping, fishing, boating and meeting new people.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, James L. Dunn, Jr. and two sisters, Anna Lane and Barbara Gottwals.

Joan is survived by her husband, J. Wayne Lawton; a son, Kevin Lawton and a daughter, Linda V. Bailey (Robert); four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home, 700 West Street, Laurel, DE 19956 on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. Pastor Tim Dukes will officiate. A visitation will be held from 6:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
