James R. Cummings of Laurel passed away on March 15, 2021 at his home. He was born on June 13, 1930 in Philadelphia, Pa. to the late Samuel Cummings and Marie Alberta Houston.
James proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1951-1953. He was retired as a printer for the State Register newspaper and from the railroad as an engineer, and after retirement he enjoyed meeting his railroad buddies for breakfast. He loved woodworking, hunting, and fishing in Canada. His love of children and fishing earned him the “Legioneer Of The Year Award” for founding and conducting the Youth Fishing Tournament in Laurel.
He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Hallowell and her husband Donald Hallowell, Jr.; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Cummings, whom passed away in 2019.
All services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mr. Cummings memory to: St. Jude Memorial Fund, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Arrangements are in the care of the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home in Laurel.
