James F. Long, Jr. of Seaford passed peacefully at his home on Monday, May 10, 2021.
He was born Nov. 23, 1929 in Wilmington, a son of the late James F. Long and Ethel Meeds Long.
Jim graduated from P.S. DuPont High School in Wilmington where he was a multi-year all-state football player. Following graduation, he proudly served in the Delaware National Guard for several years. In the Guard he also played on the football team, where he earned the nickname, “Iron Man Long.” Jim enjoyed a career of over 30 years as a tanker driver for the Exxon Co. Following retirement, he and his late wife owned and operated Seaford Music for several years. Music was Jim’s passion. He loved old-time country music and was an accomplished guitar and harmonica player. Jim held a special place in his heart for animals and especially loved his long-time companions, “Duke,” his boxer, and “Foster,” his loving rescue, mixed breed. When not working or playing music Jim could be found happily working in his yard.
He is survived by his son and faithful caregiver, James “Jimmie” F. Long, III; and several nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Catherine (Bottger) Long, who passed in 2007; and a sister, Bonnie Kemske.
No formal services will be held at this time.
