James A. Ritchie of Laurel peacefully passed away on Nov. 19, 2025. He was born on Aug. 19, 1947 to the late George C. Ritchie and Doris R. Downes. A longtime resident of Laurel, he will be remembered for his sharp wit, curiosity, and deep love for animals and nature.
James proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1965-1969. During his service, he served aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CV-42). After completing his military service, he returned home and built a fulfilling career with National Cash Register, Nanticoke Homes, and retired from the Indian River Power Plant after many dedicated years.
He was a man of many interests. In his younger years, he loved spending summers with his uncle, Ernest Adkins, building the family houseboat on the Indian River. Throughout his life, he enjoyed dirt track racing and photography. He also had a lifelong love of reading and history that fueled his sharp mind. In recent years, he embraced simple routines including walking to the pond and feeding the critters – birds, squirrels, and especially leaving out sweet treats for the raccoons. Above all, he cherished animals – both his cats and the wildlife he cared for around his neighborhood.
James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bebeth Ritchie, whom he missed dearly. He is survived by his son, Kevin B. Ritchie (Tara), and daughter, Kaitlynn N. Ritchie (Maik), as well as grandchildren: Cameron Spence, Hannah Ritchie, Kassie Carey, Maddie Carey, and great-grandchildren who will forever treasure his quiet humor. He also delighted in stories about his “grand-dogs” and “grand-turtle”.
A private family ceremony and interment will take place at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel. A memorial service will be held in the new year. Those wishing to remember him in a special way may make a donation in his honor to the SPCA or a local wildlife rehabber, celebrating his enduring love for wildlife and animals.
