Elfriede M. “Vita” Bowden of Delmar died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2026, at her home in Delmar, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born March 26, 1928, in Dambrau, Germany, daughter of the late Karl and Marie Uka.

During World War II, she met the love of her life, John Bowden, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in devotion and strength. They were married on Nov. 27, 1948, and together built a life centered around family, hard work, and unwavering love.

She was a dedicated and dependable employee throughout her years of service at Caldwell Market, Sealy Furniture, and Delmarva Heart. No matter where she worked, she was known for her strong work ethic and warm spirit.

She found joy in crafting and woodworking, and her kitchen was often filled with the comforting aroma of something homemade. She was known for baking beautiful wedding cakes that became part of so many cherished celebrations. Cooking for those she loved was one of the many ways she showed her care.

Gardening and watching hummingbirds brought her great joy. A quiet reminder of the beauty she saw in everyday life.

She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, creativity, and devotion that will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

She is survived by her five children, John H. Bowden and his wife, Barbara, of Laurel, Monica Wheatley and her husband, Thomas, of Delmar, Thomas B. Bowden and his wife, Karla, of Lewes, June Adkins of Delmar, and Penny Nichols of Delmar; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Herbert Uka.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Feb. 25 at the Laurel Fire Department.
