Edward Martin Short passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024, at home, his loving wife Mary at his side.

Born on Dec. 15, 1952 in Seaford, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Evelyn Short. Ed grew up in Seaford on a farm, the eldest of seven children, three brothers and three sisters. He and his siblings often laughed and told stories of growing up.

Ed graduated from Seaford High School in 1970. He joined the National Guard with several friends and left for Fort Dix. He was a squad leader and served for six years in the Seaford unit.

Ed was employed at NCR in 1971 to 1974 as a draftsman in the Production Engineering Department. He attended Delaware Tech, obtaining an Associate Degree in Architectural Engineering. He started his career at Justin Tanks in 1975 until 1986 as a draftsman, developing customer approval drawings and then Manufacturing Service Manager, frequently traveling, coordinating and monitoring field installation, developing monitoring production schedules, material and labor estimates. Ed graduated from Wilmington College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management in 1986 with Honors. He was employed at ILC Dover from 1986 to January 1995 as Senior Planner and supervisor in Production Control.

Ed also started the Detail Construction Company designing and building custom homes; he built many beautiful homes. Ed returned to Justin Tanks Fiberglass Manufacturing Company as President in 1995 until his death for close to 30 years. He managed executive office and plant operations. He continued his work traveling all over the country to job sites, for inspections and meetings and presented at professional conferences.  He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and served on the RTP-1 national committee with designing standards for fiberglass vessels, under American Composites Manufacturers Association.

Ed most enjoyed happiness spending time with his wife Mary, the love of his life. He loved traveling to their favorite place in Clearwater, Fla. on the beach and recently returned from a most cherished trip. They did many trips together, traveling to Vegas, Jamaica and Costa Rica. They enjoyed ski trips in the past. They were always together, enjoying restaurants, seafood, being with friends and family, pool parties, and just relaxing at home watching news and movies. They were celebrating 20 years together in January. They married in 2011. Additionally he enjoyed time with his three stepsons, their wives, and now six grandchildren, known as “Grandpop.”

He very much treasured and loved his daughter Lindsey. He often spoke of enjoying time with her growing up and the many special things they did together. Ed loved gathering with his family and his siblings and spent many Saturday mornings eating breakfast out together, attending many family reunions and dinners.

Ed is survived by his wife, Mary Crovetto-Short; his daughter, Lindsey M. Short; stepsons, Dustin Shultie (Shannon), Chris Phillips (Abby), Corey Phillips (Kelly); sister-in-law, Nancy Crovetto; siblings, Charlie Short (Vivian), Christine O’Bier (Mark), Dale Short (Debbie), Frances Morthole (George), Bruce Short (Suzanne), and Carol Schwan; many nieces and nephews, and numerous extended family members, friends and colleagues.

A funeral service was held Nov. 25 at Cranston Funeral Home. Interment was in Milford Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Ed will be deeply missed by his wife, family, friends and all who knew him. His endless love and caring, always taking care of everyone. His sense of humor, fun loving, strong personal qualities, intelligence and dedication, a truly wonderful man. He is forever in our hearts, and we will cherish the memories of love, happiness, and laughter he brought to our lives.
