David Evans of Laurel passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025 at Bayhealth Kent Campus, surrounded by his loving family. Born on Sept. 15, 1958, in Seaford, he was the son of the late David “Sonny” Evans and Mary Ellen West Evans.

David was a proud graduate of Laurel High School, Class of 1976, and was named the Delaware state champion in track in 1975. After graduation, he remained closely connected to his classmates, organizing reunions and fostering lifelong friendships. David, known to many as “Dave,” built a successful career as a butcher and proudly owned French’s Food Rite in Laurel. For his dedication to the Laurel community, he was honored with the “Citizen of the Year” award. He later retired from the Food Lion Company.

An avid outdoorsman, Dave loved hunting, fishing with his grandchildren, and crabbing with his father. He found joy in coaching softball and mentoring young athletes. His teaching style was grounded in encouragement, allowing others to learn through experience without judgment. Dave passed on his deep appreciation for the outdoors to his children and grandchildren, often attending their sporting events and cheering them on. His quick wit, warm humor, and ability to make others smile left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

He is survived by his daughters: Ashley Evans, Whitney Evans (Yani Soto), Courtney Bristow (Bryce), and Amanda Evans; his mother, Mary Ellen West Evans; his brother, Ricky Evans (Jodi); his sister, Shelley Evans; grandchildren: Ashtyn Cornelius (Morgan), Ty Jefferson, Palmer Short, Carter Bristow, and Briggs Bristow; father-in-law, Edgar Nichols (Betty Ann Nichols); brother-in-law, Steve Callaway; and his beloved grand-dog, Benny. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his father, David “Sonny” Evans, he was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Jean Callaway.

A visitation was held on Saturday, May 24 at Elliott’s Worship Center in Laurel followed by the funeral service, officiated by Pastor Tim Dukes. Interment followed at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in David’s memory to the Laurel Little League and Trap Pond. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.hsdfuneralhome.com.
