Carrie Jean Reed of Bridgeville passed away in her sleep at her son’s home on Sunday, July 7, 2024. She was born on May 12, 1943, in Princess Anne, daughter of the late Richard V. and Laura (Evans) Powell.

After graduating high school, Mrs. Reed married the love of her life, John W. Reed in Delmar, Del. on Nov. 25, 1961, and the two spent the next 63 years together creating countless memories and raising their family. For several years, she helped her husband on the farm and raised her children. When her children grew a little older, she started working as a clerk for the Department of Justice, retiring after many dedicated years.

Mrs. Reed was a child of God and enjoyed Bible study and her love of knowledge and deep faith never waned. Her love for the outdoors was evident in her favorite pastimes – birdwatching and admiring colorful flowers. While indoors, she loved cooking, always trying new recipes for her family and friends. But it was as a loving wife and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother that brought her great joy. Mrs. Reed’s most endearing qualities were those of being generous and loving to those she held near to her heart. She will be deeply missed and forever loved by all the lives she has touched.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Reed was predeceased by her sisters: Debbie Powell, Beatrice Hopkins, and Kathy Hopkins; and her brother, Richard (Dicky) Powell. She is survived by her husband, John W. Reed  of Bridgeville; her sons:  John W. Reed, Jr. (Mary) of Bridgeville and Elwood B. Reed, III of Bridgeville; her daughters:  Kathy J. Willms (Jeff), and  Karen L. Reed  (fiancé Bruce Leppo of Seaford), both of Bridgeville; her grandsons: Justin Reed and Jordan Reed of Laurel; her granddaughter, Carrie Reed  and her granddaughter in heart,  Bella Reed of Bridgeville; her great-grandson, Oliver Reed of Laurel; her great-granddaughter, Maddison E. Jean Reed of Laurel; her brothers: Carl Powell of Dover  and William “Billy” Powell of Deal Island, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held on Friday, July 12 at Bloomery Cemetery in Federalsburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Mrs. Reed’s memory to John 21 Ministries, 9290 Rifle Range Rd., Bridgeville, DE 19933.
