It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Barry E. Wheatley, II, a devoted public servant, beloved family man, and cherished friend to all. Barry passed away in Seaford on Feb. 4, 2025 after a courageous yearlong battle against stage IV prostate cancer.
Born and raised in Seaford, Barry’s commitment to his community was evident from an early age. A graduate of Seaford Senior High School in 1992, he pursued higher education at Wilmington University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Management and a Master’s degree in Homeland Security and Organizational Leadership. His dedication to law enforcement began with his graduation from the 55th Delaware State Police Municipal Class at the Millsboro Police Academy in June 2001.
Barry proudly served as a Sergeant with the Millsboro Police Department from 2001 to 2021. His passion for justice and mentorship led him to Delaware Technical Community College, where he shaped future law enforcement professionals as a Criminal Justice Instructor from 2021 to 2023. Continuing his commitment to public safety, Barry joined the Delaware Natural Resources & Environmental Control as a Senior Corporal in the Environmental Crimes Unit in 2023.
His impact extended beyond his professional roles. As a Vice President and Founding Member of Blessings for Badges, Barry worked tirelessly to support fellow officers. A dedicated member of Masonic Lodge #37 in Dagsboro, he exemplified the values of brotherhood and community service.
Barry’s volunteerism was a beacon of inspiration. His unwavering support for Special Olympics Delaware culminated in being honored as the 2024 Torch Runner of the Year—the highest recognition bestowed upon a law enforcement officer in the Delaware Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics movement.
A man of many passions, Barry was an avid San Francisco 49ers fan and enjoyed sharing his love for sports. His expertise as a firearms instructor spanned 20 years, and he took great pride in mentoring others in firearm safety and proficiency. Barry’s adventures as a motorcycle officer and his joy in perfecting firearms showcased his dedication to his craft.
Above all, Barry cherished his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Crystal M. Wheatley, and his adored daughters, Allie and Rory Wheatley. Together, they created memories traveling and camping, and he took immense pride in supporting his daughters’ Girl Scout activities. His home was filled with love and laughter, shared with his pets—dogs Buttercup Rose and Huckleberry Blue, and cat Pete.
Barry is also survived by his sister, Tiffany Hooper as well as numerous other beloved family members. Additionally, Barry was incredibly lucky to have a large circle of friends he considered family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Barry E. Wheatley and Katherine Trice Roberts and his sister, Lisa Vasquez.
A man of unwavering dedication, Barry was known for his kindness, generosity, and quick wit. He never met a stranger and was always ready to lend a helping hand. His intelligence and humility were admired by many—though he would lovingly admit he was “not as smart as his wife.”
Funeral Services with police honors will be held at noon on Monday, February 17 at Bay Shore Community Church, 36759 Millsboro Hwy, Millsboro, DE 19966, where friends may call beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be private.
