Barbara H. (Hitchens) Scott
Barbara H. Scott passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, at Cadia Renaissance in Millsboro.
Barbara was born in Salisbury, daughter of the late James H. and Jerdie E. (Oliphant) Hitchens. The Hitchens family of eight children were raised in Gumboro, where many still hold deep roots today.
After graduating from high school, Barbara worked as a lab technician at the Seaford DuPont Nylon Plant. Barbara then made the move to a career in banking with Sussex Trust as a bank teller. After several years with Sussex Trust, she took a position in credit services with Tidemark Federal Credit Union, where her career spanned 29 years. She retired from full-time in 2006, returning part-time until 2022.
Barbara loved spending time at the beach with her siblings, family gatherings of any kind, camping, playing the slots with her sisters, and supporting events and monthly breakfasts at the Gumboro Community Center.
In addition to her parents, Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Alton W. Scott; grandson, Aiden Savage; daughter-in-law, Beth Brown Scott; and two brothers, Vernon Hitchens, and Gerald Hitchens.
She is survived by her two children, Wesley Scott, Wendy Scott-Savage and husband Jesse; three grandchildren, Corey Scott, Talan Savage, and Avery Savage; five siblings, Paul Hitchens (Norma Lee), Thelma Banks, Janice Robinson, Bonnie Abbott, and Debbie Cordrey (Dennis); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1 in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market Street, Georgetown, where a time of visitation for family and friends will begin at 11 a.m. Burial at Carey’s Cemetery will be held privately.
