Alvin Elmer “JR” Downes, Jr. of Laurel passed away on Wednesday, Feb, 5, 2025, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Brenda, his high school sweetheart. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Doris Downes of Delmar.

JR served in the United States Coast Guard for over 20 years traveling up and down the east coast until he retired in 1998. He loved to watch old westerns, football, and was a die-hard Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan. He loved music, tinkering with projects, and was a true believer of the Lord.

He was a family man, and his granddaughter Makenzie was the apple of his eye. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter Tonya (Jamie) of Wellington, Fla.; his son Jason (Kristin) of Laurel; granddaughter Makenzie; brothers Douglas (Cathy), Alan (Barbara), Kipp (Michelle), Gerry (Patti) and Darrell. JR also leaves behind two aunts, Charlotte and Fran, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17 at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro. Following the service family and friends are welcome to join together for a time of fellowship at Melson’s Church Community Building on Melson Road in Delmar.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Odd Fellows Lodge 27, P.O. Box 146, Laurel, DE 19956 for the kindness they have shown to JR with a ramp built especially for him and medical equipment for his use.
