Alton W. Scott passed away at home on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024.

Alton was born in Lewes and was a lifelong resident of Sussex County. He worked at E.I. du Pont Company in Seaford in the maintenance department from where he retired after 38 years.

Alton served for six years in the Army National Guard. His memberships included Delaware Lodge #37 Masonic Lodge and American Legion Post 24, both in Dagsboro. Alton was also a life member of Georgetown Fire Department Station 77.

Alton loved to socialize and was always ready for good conversation and lots of laughs.

Alton was preceded in death by his father, Wesley W. Scott; mother, Sarah (Shockley) Parker; stepfather, Samuel Parker; grandson, Aiden Savage; brother, James W. Scott; and daughter-in-law, Beth Brown Scott.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Barbara (Hitchens) Scott; son, Wesley Scott; daughter, Wendy Scott-Savage and husband Jesse; three grandchildren, Corey Scott, Talan Savage and Avery Savage; sister-in-law, Ruth Scott (wife of James); and Barbara’s siblings to whom he was close, Paul Hitchens and wife Norma Lee, Thelma Banks, Janice Robinson, Grace Hitchens, Bonnie Abbott and Debbie Cordrey and husband Denny; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 21 in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market Street, Georgetown, where a time of visitation for family and friends will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Carey’s Cemetery.
