Alan R. Whaley of Laurel passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021 at TidalHealth Nanticoke in Seaford surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on Jan. 7, 1936 in Laurel, a son of the late Clarence and Mary (Wilkinson) Whaley.
Alan and Sug were married at the young age of 19, and enjoyed almost 67 years of married life together. His family has been a special part of his life. He enjoyed surf fishing and camping at Delaware Beaches, Assateague, Outer Banks, and Roaring Point. Alan was proud to tell his friends that he and Sug had traveled to 47 of the United States. Alan retired from the Dupont Company in Seaford after many years of service.
He is survived by his loving wife, Charlene “Sug” Whaley; children, Eddie Whaley (Tracy), Phyllis Toomey (Ray) and Nancy Hamilton; grandchildren, Dustin Hamilton (Verity) and Daniel Hamilton (Megan); great-grandchildren, Brady, Zoey, Chase, and Grace; siblings, Arlene Conaway (Preston), Robert Whaley (Adele), Jack Whaley (Lorraine), Doug Whaley (Patty), and Wayne Whaley (Helen); and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Dick Whaley.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 7, 2022 at Short Funeral Home in Delmar. Pastor Larry Whaley will officiate. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service. For the safety of those attending, face masks will be required during the visitation and service.
