It is with great sadness that the Hawkins family announces the passing of Al Hawkins. He passed peacefully at home on Dec. 25, 2021 surrounded by his wife Martha, and their daughters, Beth Johnson and Valerie Hicks and their families.
Al was a Captain at the Naval District Washington Fire Department for 25 years, where he retired in 2000. He was a past Chief at the Brentwood, Maryland Fire Department. He was in the Navy and a Vietnam vet having served two tours in the 1960s. Al was a graduate of Northwestern High School.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Martha; their daughters Beth Johnson, her husband and several grandchildren and Valerie Hicks and two grandchildren. He is also survived by his natural children Barbara Sweeney and Diane Shirley and their families, including his oldest grandson, Chris Hawkins, his wife Angela and great-grandson Carson. Al was predeceased by his parents, William and Ollie Hawkins.
The family is holding a memorial service on Friday, Jan. 28 at noon at the Hannigan Short Funeral Home, 700 West Street, Laurel, Delaware 19956. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11 a.m.-noon. Interment will follow in the Delaware Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Millsboro at 2 p.m. Arrangements are in the care of the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home in Laurel.
