Salisbury University has over 700 student-athletes in 23 varsity sports along with 14 competitive club sports programs and intramural programs. The school’s varsity sports teams have helped earn the Seagulls back-to-back community service recognitions.

Salisbury University Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation Monica Gordy Polizzi spoke at the Fruitland Chamber of Commerce General Membership Luncheon on June 17 at Elks Lodge in Salisbury. Polizzi is a Salisbury native and a 2000 Parkside graduate.

The school’s athletes have won 26 individual national championships and the teams have won 211 conference titles. Salisbury University recently brought back men’s golf, which existed in the 1970’s and 80’s, and added women’s golf. There is a golf simulator on campus when the teams are not able to make it to the school’s golf course at Green Hill Country Club. The school’s marching band also returned to add to game day experiences.

Although the varsity teams are Division III programs, the student-athletes are now competing year-round with off-season practices and games.

“It really is a year-round community now,” she said. “There really isn’t an off-season for these student-athletes anymore.”

Salisbury University also has 14 club sports teams, including ice hockey, equestrian, ultimate frisbee, and men’s and women’s rugby.

“We want to provide the best experience possible for our student-athletes,” said Polizzi.

The Huffman Family Sports Performance Center was dedicated last September, giving athletes training and recovery opportunities. The Maggs Center also has a new basketball court, multiyear renovations to the Maggs natatorium were completed last summer, there is new branding and padding at the baseball and softball fields, and pickle ball courts were put in next to the tennis center last summer.

The Sea Gulls also receive recognition for their community service, earning back-to-back Division III community service champion honors. The school has a 95 percent community service student participation rate. Student-athletes worked 9,500 community service hours in 2025 and 14,949 hours in 2026, helping organizations such as HALO, Sea Gull Century, elementary schools, city of Salisbury, Humane Society, and Special Olympics.
