Outgoing mayor reflects on 12-year legacy as new Council takes office

Community spirit filled the room at 39 Circle on Tuesday, May 26 as residents packed the Georgetown Town Council meeting. The exceptionally high attendance created a supportive atmosphere for a night of transition.

Honoring 12 years of leadership

The heart of the meeting centered on honoring outgoing Mayor Bill West, marking the conclusion of his remarkable 12-year tenure leading the town. This milestone caps off an impressive 43 total years of dedicated public service. During the tribute, several key accomplishments from West’s leadership were highlighted:

• Healthcare Expansion: The addition and positive community impact of PAM Hospital.
• Mental Health Services: The successful implementation and state support of Sun Behavioral Health Services.
• Legal Excellence: Maintaining a flawless, lawsuit-free record throughout his entire time in office.

The council expressed official recognition by presenting plaques of appreciation to Mayor West and outgoing council member Eric Evans, thanking them for their years of steadfast dedication.

Town infrastructure and leadership updates

Progress remains steady on town infrastructure, particularly regarding the new police department construction. Updates revealed that crews are pouring the foundation for the brand-new police facility. This project will finally move the town’s 25-officer force out of their cramped quarters in the “old button factory.”

The council also paused to praise Town Manager Gene Dvornick. Attendees acknowledged Gene’s strong regional reputation, legislative involvement, and critical role in keeping Georgetown running smoothly day-to-day.

The oath of office: Looking to the future

The energy shifted toward tomorrow with the official swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected town council members.

Stepping aside, outgoing Mayor Bill West offered a final call to action for the incoming leadership. He advised the new council to review the town charter and look into hiring an “alderman.” This role would legally fine and penalize repeat property code violators, addressing issues like unkept high grass.

Angela Townsend was sworn in as the town’s new mayor and Michael Briggs is the new councilman.

Looking ahead with unity

The evening concluded on a message of unity. The council recalled Mayor West’s final emphasis that disagreement is normal, but coming together with a shared understanding is what makes a true community. Looking ahead, the town wished the new council members great success.

The meeting ended on a sweet note, highlighting upcoming local developments—including the highly anticipated addition of two new local ice cream shops for residents to enjoy.
