On Sunday, Oct. 5, St. Philip’s Episcopal Church will hold its annual Blessing of the Animals at Old Christ Church Prayer Cove (Old Christ Church Rd. and Chipmans Pond Rd.). The 10:30 a.m. outdoor service will include communion and all are invited to bring your favorite pet (or a picture of your pet) to be blessed during the service. Seating is somewhat limited, so you may choose to bring a folding chair for your comfort. In case of inclement weather, the service will be moved inside Old Christ Church.

The Blessing of Animals is a tradition that honors St. Francis of Assisi’s love of animals and celebrates the bond that exists between humans and animals. This celebration is typically celebrated on or around Oct. 4, the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. The Blessing of Animals is not only an Episcopal practice, but is also celebrated by many denominations in the Christian tradition.

For those members of St. Philip’s not attending the service at Old Christ Church, there will be an additional service celebrated that day at 8:30 a.m. at St. Philip’s Church, 600 S. Central Ave., in Laurel. There will be no 9:30 a.m. service as regularly scheduled. Please know that all are welcome at both services.
