Charles Russell Elzey, fondly known as “Ricky,” passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2025, at his son’s home in Seaford. Born on Nov. 8, 1951, in Cambridge, Ricky built a life centered around his faith, family, and the joy he brought to others.

Before answering the call to the ministry, Ricky dedicated 24 years to Standard Register in Salisbury. He later became a beloved pastor at Georgetown Wesleyan Church and Christ the Cornerstone Community Church in Laurel, where his passion for sharing the message of Jesus resonated with many. He loved to witness to anyone he met. Ricky’s musical talents shone brightly as he sang in a quartet along with his wife and later harmonized with his wife and kids at local churches.

Ricky’s warmth extended beyond the pulpit; he volunteered at the Cheer Center in Georgetown, a role that brought him immense joy. He cherished time spent with his family, always quick with a joke and armed with a witty comeback. He found peace watching the birds and geese at Trap Pond, a spot he dearly loved.

He was a proud father to his sons David Martin Elzey (Mary) and Daniel Brent Elzey (Barb Wade), and his daughter Donna Anne Young (Anthony). Ricky found immeasurable joy in being a grandfather to his eight cherished grandchildren: Tyler, Zachary, Devon, Caden, Addison Elzey, Zachery and Zakayla Young and Kaylie Figgs. His legacy of kindness and compassion will live on through them. He is also survived by his sister, Beth Littleton, and many nieces and nephews who will forever hold fond memories of their time together.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Vernita M. (Parsons) Elzey, father Charles B. Elzey, mother Ida Frances (Tregoe) Elzey, and brothers Steve and David Elzey.

The family would like to extend special thanks to three Accent Care Hospice nurses—Brandy Givens, Erica Myers, and Jessica Crowe, who provided such wonderful care in his final days.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Aug. 29 at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, with a visitation beginning at 10 a.m., followed by the service at 11 a.m. Pastors Bryant and Nakeia Elzey will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Stephen’s Cemetery in Delmar.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Accent Care Hospice at 220 Continental Drive, Suite 407, Newark, DE 19713, to honor Ricky’s legacy of care and compassion.
