David L. “Pete” Givens of Laurel passed away on Aug. 10, 2025 at TidalHealth Nanticoke in Seaford, surrounded by his loving family. Pete was born on Sept. 28, 1944 to the late Linwood F. Givens and Margaret O. Givens. He graduated from Laurel High School in the “Class of 1962” and was a past President of the FFA during his high school years.
After graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States National Guard for six years. He was a licensed master electrician, working for his brother, James F. Givens Electrical, for nearly 40 years and owning his own electrical business from 2009 until retirement in 2023, as well as a lifelong farmer, retiring in 2024. Pete enjoyed dirt track racing and was a driver in the 1970’s.
He is survived by his son, Michael D. Givens (Laura) of Laurel; daughter, Michelle G. Farlow (Michael) of Snow Hill; granddaughters, Victoria Libertini, Faith Givens, Ruby Farlow, and Violet Farlow; niece, Lisa H. Gray (Tim) of Selbyville; and his second wife, Bettie Nelson-Givens. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lee B. Givens of nearly 52 years (married 10/29/1966-01/30/2018), and brother, James F. Givens.
The Givens family would like to give a heartfelt “Thank You” to the Sussex County Paramedics, Laurel Ambulance Crews, and the staff at TidalHealth Nanticoke, who provided outstanding patience and compassionate care to their entire family.
A graveside service was held on Tuesday, Aug. 19 at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Laurel. Reverend Bill Nack officiated. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest contributions be made in David “Pete” Givens honor to the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department or any local FFA Chapter of your choice.
