The Delaware District III host team set the pace in the opening round of the Senior League World Series last Monday in Roxana with a five inning 14-2 win over Connecticut. Manager Clint Lutz spread the pitches with four players and Cierra Lewis captured the win in the opening round. The pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts and gave up one hit and one walk that kept Connecticut on its heels.

District III’s Adrianna Heck singles in the second inning of the Senior Softball World Series game in Roxanna. Heck had two hits including a double, scored two runs, and one RBI in the 14-2 win over Connecticut.

In the first inning, District III showed its solid skills with an opening single by Adeline Lutz who then stole a base with Karly Kruger at the plate. A sacrifice bunt moved Lutz to third and a ground out scored the first run. Lewis struck for the first double and Jordyn Bowe singled up the middle for a 2-0 first inning lead.

The team scored again in the top of the second inning beginning with a double by Mariah McCabe and the next two plays resulted in a 4-0 lead. Shortstop Kimora Harris doubled in a run and a single by Lewis scored a sixth run. Lewis remained strong in the bottom of the second inning with a strikeout and two ground balls to the circle for a quick Connecticut inning.

The host team added three runs in the third inning, opening with an error on a ground ball. A hit and run play and two sacrifice fly balls upped the score to 8-0. Makenna Blades’ sacrifice bunt and later an RBI single by Karly Kruger gave District III a 9-0 lead.

District III went on to score three runs in the fourth inning on RBIs by Autumn Willie, Sophia Bowen, and Blades. Connecticut scored in the bottom of the inning against pitcher Akayla Eikenberry with a hit batter, fielding error, an infield RBI, and passed ball for the 12-2 score. In the fifth, Georgetown added two runs on a single by Hadleigh Shwartz, and an RBI by Brionna Clark.

The opening game ended after five innings when Connecticut was unable to score.
